Gear & Tone Atlas
VerifiedThe instruments, pedals, amplifiers, and signal chain that shape the sound of Chet Atkins.
What defines the sound
Atkins played Gretsch and later signature hollow-body guitars with a thumbpick and bare fingers, keeping a steady alternating bass under chords and melody. His clean, bright tone often carried a short slap-back echo from a tape unit. The technique, learned from Merle Travis and refined into his own style, made one guitar sound like a full arrangement.
